New insurance policy for residence permit applicants

With their 53821/2014 Common Ministerial Decision, the Ministers of Interior, Health & Social Security decided the types of insurance coverages that non-EU citizens should submit, when applying for any kind of residence permit. In particular:

A. Citizens of third countries entering and residing legally in Greece for one of the grounds of Law 4251/2014 and applying for the grant or renewal of residence permits shall submit:

a) Insurance contracts signed abroad if they explicitly state that they cover the applicants for as long as they reside in Greece, or

b) Insurance contracts signed in Greece.

B. The coverage of insurance policies relates to:

  • Insurance of permanent total or partial disability due to accident. The amount of covered benefits should amount to at least 15,000 euro per year, with a 20% maximum participation of the insured. 
  • Medical expenses due to illness or accident. The amount of covered benefits should amount to at least 1500 euro per year, with a 20% maximum participation of the insured.
  • Wide hospitalization. The amount of covered benefits should amount to at least 10,000 euro per year, with a 20% maximum participation of the insured.

C. The policies will not be accepted in cases they involve exemptions and special additional agreements.

D. The policies should cover a minimum period of one year. If the duration of the residence permit goes beyond the duration of the contract, the latter will necessarily be renewed every year.
