Yannis is an expert in Greek and international financial services law and regulation and provides specialist advice relating to IPOs, hedge and other funds, investment management and custody and the regulatory aspects of acquisitions and disposals.
He also has developed special expertise in the area of EU, internal market and competition law and has experience of advising on contractual and regulatory structures for financial products, companies and limited partnerships, investment managers, automated trading systems and other financial services businesses. He regularly deals with regulatory issues arising within the sphere of the Greek financial authorities including, but not limited to, the authorisation and ongoing supervision of banking, investment and insurance businesses, the availability of the European “passport” for providing financial services on a cross-border basis.
During his involvement in the Greek government as an expert in investment law, he was one of the drafters of the Fast Track Law (Law 3894/2010 as amended by Law 4072/2012), a powerful mechanism that gives regulatory and tax incentives to FDI and other investments by providing an accelerating and transparency enhancement tool for the procedures relating to their implementation in Greece.
He served as the Director of the Cabinet and Legal Advisor to the Minister of State (2009-2011), Visiting Professor at Queen Mary, University of London (2002-2004), Fellow in EU Financial Services Law at the British Institute of International & Comparative Law (BIICL) (2000-2004), Legal Advisor at the Department of International policy Coordination & European Affairs of the Financial Services Authority (FSA) (2001), and Emile Noel Fellow at Harvard Law School (2001-2002).
He is currently a Teaching Fellow at the Law School of University of Thrace, where he teaches EU Law, Competition Law and International Economic Law, and a Fellow of the European Law Institute (ELI), based in Vienna. He is also Member of the Board of the Hellenic Competition Commission. He is often invited to give speeches and seminars on EU competition law, arbitration and Greek law.
Finally, he is advising the Greek government (Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund) on the ongoing privatisation of the former airport of Athens (Hellinikon), one of the biggest real estate development projects in the world. He is also advising the management of a major Greek bank on its restructuring and recapitalisation process.
